Our Programs

We are committed to providing excellent programs that prepare candidates for initial licensure to teach. We work closely with the more than 55 school districts in our expansive region to develop and implement teacher preparation programs for a wide range of school settings. The Division is pleased to offer basic teacher preparation programs in:

  • Multiple Subject - These programs license teachers for the elementary setting or multiple subject setting and include a bilingual (Spanish) option.
  • Single Subject - Graduates of these programs are licensed to teach a specific content area to secondary students.
  • Special Education - The Special Education Credential Program at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) offers a graduate course of study that leads to a California Educational Specialist Credential and/or a Master's of Science Degree. Students may choose to specialize in one of the following three authorization areas: Mild/Moderate Disabilities, Moderate/Severe Disabilities, or Early Childhood Special Education.
  • Career & Technical Education - This credential is for those candidates seeking employment with a Regional Occupational Program (ROP), Public or Charter School or Correctional Institution. It also beneficial for persons teaching in a community college, private secondary or post-secondary environment.

All of our programs are accredited by the state of California and the National Council for the Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE). We are proud of our programs and of our graduates. We look forward to collaborating with you in your pursuit of a teaching credential.

Multiple Subject Programs

What is a Multiple Subject Credential? A Multiple Subject Credential authorizes a person to teach all students including English language learners in a self-contained classroom (grades K-12 but generally grades K-6). Persons who obtain a Multiple Subject Credential with BCLAD emphasis are authorized to teach ethnically and linguistically diverse students in a self-contained classroom (grades K-12 but generally grades K-6) using both English and the students' primary language for instruction. Visit the Multiple Subjects Credential Program web page for more information.

In order to receive a Multiple Subject Credential, candidates must complete the following state requirements.

  • Approved Teacher Preparation Program (CSUSB's Multiple Subject Program)
  • Baccalaureate Degree
  • Subject Matter Competency through CSET
  • California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)
  • Certificate of Clearance
  • U.S. Constitution
  • Assessment of Candidate's Knowledge, Skills and Dispositions
  • Reading Instruction Competency Assessment (RICA)
  • CPR-infant, child, & adult (see page 4 of the handbook)
  • Language Requirement (BCLAD only)

Single Subject Programs

The Single Subject program prepares teachers to become leaders in transformative education, an evolutionary process of change by which schooling practices become increasingly effective in promoting learning in urban settings. Inquiry and reflective practice are the foundations of the transformative process, a process that allows teachers to evaluate current school practices and imagine teaching and learning in new ways. Visit the Single Subject Credential Program web page for more information.
