Credential Program (PPS) in School Psychology
The School Psychology Program at CSU San Bernardino provides professional preparation for becoming a School Psychologist. The program is designed to fulfill all mandates for the Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Psychology established by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). The program is also designed to meet the national accreditation standards of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).
The CSU San Bernardino School Psychology Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree combined with the PPS program is a 63 semester unit sequence of training. It is designed for individuals with backgrounds in psychology, education, child development, and other social services. The Ed.S. and PPS combined program can be completed in under 3 years.
Additionally, we offer a PPS program in School Psychology. This program is designed for professionals who already possess a Masters or Doctoral degree in Educational Counseling, Psychology, Child Development, Special Education, Education, Marriage/Family Therapy, and Social Work, or are in the final stages of training for such a discipline (e.g. final year of coursework or finishing a culminating experience). Previous coursework will be substituted with appropriate verification using transcripts and course catalog descriptions from the college or university where this coursework was completed. After being admitted into the PPS program, students meet with faculty to determine the appropriate sequence of coursework. The PPS program typically takes 2 years to complete.
For the Ed.S. student, the first and second years of the program consist of eighteen courses (nine each year with three courses taken each; fall, winter, and spring quarters). While our classes are held at night, students must be available to obtain 450 hours of practicum experience. These hours are done, on a volunteer basis, in the school setting to obtain a better understanding of the job of a school psychologist and prepares the student for their final stage of training. The final stage of training for either program includes 1200 hour field experience which may be paid (referred to as internship) or unpaid (referred to as fieldwork).
Included in the internship sequence are twelve hundred (1200) hours in a school setting (P-12), or clinic setting (up to 400 hours), which are accrued year round. Supervision is provided on site a minimum of two hours per week by a credentialed school psychologist with at least three years of experience in the field. The student is also supervised on the university site two hours per week during the internship year.
